You're driving in the car, with maybe your mom and little sister. You turn on the radio and tune it to one of the hit-music pop stations. Rihanna's sexy S&M romp is on. Your little sister likes it and starts to sing along. You may wonder, what's wrong with this picture? S&M is an abbreviation for the word sadomasochistic. Sadomasochism is a type of sex that involves physical/emotional abuse/pain in the form of whipping, using chains & other weapons, etc. If you have a filter on your search engine, and search the term S&M, the content will be blocked because of explicit graphics. Just a few days ago, I actually sang along to the song, thinking it was catchy and fun. Little did I know the real meaning of it. If the title isn't enough to totally disgust you, in the song she says, "Sticks and stones many break my bones but chains and whips excite me." Do you think an elementary or middle schooler would know what sadomasochism is? No, I highly doubt it. But the question is why is this permitted to be played on the radio? I'm considering writing a complaint because it is so horrible that young people are being exposed to this in the form of a catchy pop song. What baffles me is that Rihanna of all people, a victim of abuse, would sing about a sick and twisted topic such as S&M so casually, knowing that children are listening. She has a young following, and I know kids and teens nationwide have this song on their ipod, naively unaware. I used to be a Rihanna fan, but quite frankly, this threw me over the edge. I don't know what she was thinking. Her need to be 'edgy' and 'wild' sends an awful message. Imagine a teenage boy who thinks Rihanna is attractive is listening to this song: he's going to get the picture that women like this kind of 'edgy' whips and chains sort of thing.
