Piercings: Hot or Not

A pierced ear is common, even for guys. Many people even get multiple ear piercings ranging from cartilage rings to tragus piercings to gauges. The ear is not the only common place for piercing: some people get nose studs and rings, naval, lip, eyebrow and even tongue piercings. But how far is too far? It's definitely a personal choice, and people are free to get however many or however few piercing they like, but is there a point at which it just becomes downright gross? You're at risk for infection when you get pierced, especially in sensitive areas like the tongue and belly button. During pregnancy, naval piercings stretch out and put you at a higher risk for infection. If you're thinking about getting a piercing, make sure you go to a salon that's clean and reliable & be sure to follow all of their instructions on caring for your piercing. At home piercings should not be done: they're unsanitary and put you at a higher risk for infection!

Comment your opinions on whether you think they're are hot or not--and to what extent!

Song of the Week: I Like It Like That- Hot Chelle Rae

Last week, I made a post about a song called Glad You Came, and my predictions are becoming true, as it is slowly but steadily climbing higher on the billboard charts:) I'm going to try my luck again, and predict that I Like it Like That by Hot Chelle Rae will be a hit by mid-December. I love this song because it has a catchy chorus, great vocals, and clever lyrics. What do you think? Check it out here on youtube!

Splurge of the Month- Carriere Freres Candles

Candles are an obsession of mine, I'm always looking for good smelling ones. I'm picky about my scents though, I don't like anything to synthetic smelling or harsh. I have yet to find one Carriere Freres candle that I think is to perfumey.  All of their candles smell great, and have many subtle notes of flowers that combine to make a sensational scents. The con, however is that they're pretty expensive. One candle cost's about $45.00 (about 29 pounds). All in all, though, I think that they're great to splurge on, and they last forever (each candle burns for about 50 hours). My favorite scents are Jasmininum Officinale (Jasmine), Lonicera Fragrantissima (Honey Suckle), and Lilium Regale (Royal Lily).

Nail Polish...Without The Harmful Chemicals!

Who doesn't love getting a cute manicure? There are so many cool & creative things you can do with your nails. What most people don't realize is that most nail polishes contain dangerous carcinogenic(are believed to cause cancer) chemicals, like DBP, toluene, and formaldehyde. When I heard this I vowed never to use nail polish again. I couldn't handle it! I missed having my nails bright fuschia, or mint green, lavender, glittering blue--you name it! I later stumbled upon the solution. There are certain brands out there that are DBP, toluene, and formaldehyde free! I recommend Karma Organic, Nubar Polish, and Essie (these are all clickable links!) which is found in most salons. And don't worry, you're not sacrificing anything by using these brands--the colors are fabulous! I also recommend using Karma Organic nail polish remover--it doesn't have all of the nasty chemicals that the usual acetone remover contains. (P.S. All of the cute nail polish colors to the left can be found on Karma Organic!)

Eat What You Want This Holiday Season!

Whenever I hear advice about food swaps during Thanksgiving, I ignore them completely. Don't get me wrong--I'm all for healthy alternatives! But, in my opinion, Thanksgiving is that day where its okay to pig out! The holidays are definitely a time of serious eating. My advice is to eat healthy during the time leading up to holidays, but don't stress during the actual holiday. Relax, and enjoy yourself...it's definitely no fun to be worried about what you should and shouldn't eat when everyone is having a great time. Although, I  do recommend hitting the gym more than ever, during the holiday season. Try to get a vigorous cardio workout at least 3 times a week.

Song of the Week: Glad You Came- The Wanted

I'm always listening to my ipod, and I'm always looking for new music. Anytime I hear a good song on the radio, it's stuck in my head for a week. That's where I heard this song. Glad You Came is a catchy pop song with an infectious melody that you'll be humming along to for days. My prediction? This song will be a hit before the month is over. Check it out on youtube and see if you like it!

Deciphering the Runways- Winter 2011 Style

All over the runways, thousands of outfits have been paraded across the catwalk. Here's what'll be big this winter:

Color- Normally, for colder seasons, designers prefer to use darker colors, such as grey and black. This winter, vivid colors will be showcased in daring combinations.

40's Elegance- Elegance never really goes out of style, but this year it's playing a major role in fashion's line up. Fashion repeats itself!

Midi and Maxi skirts- No, I didn't make a typo, a midi skirt is the term for a middle length skirt. Midi and Maxi skirts this season are a seriously hot trend, so it's time to ditch the mini skirts you were planning to pair with leggings for winter, and go get some of these instead:)

Midi's

Maxi's

Chunky Knit Sweaters- Winter is a cold season, so it's no surprise that designers have included these warm but still fashionable pieces into their wardrobes.

Pleats and Frills- This is the romantic statement this season, perfect for keeping a bit of fun femininity in your wardrobe.

Prints- By far the biggest, most prominent trend this winter is prints. Designers are offering everything from flowers to polka dots to broken glass, and even feathers and panthers.

Also big this winter are Zoological styles, layered looks, and bold statement coats.

A Note on Fur
Winters arrival brings out a lot of fur on the runways. Increasingly, many designers are switching to faux fur, in order to prevent cruelty to animals who have to die so that the fur can be obtained. Though the no-fur campaign is gaining momentum throughout the fashion world, still only 1/3 of high fashion designers use faux fur instead of real fur. Fur should stay on animals, not on people's backs. Next time you reach for that fur coat that caught your eye on the rack, think about the animal that had to die so that coat could be made. Switch to faux fur, and look stylish while feeling confident that your outfit is 100% cruelty free. High fashion doesn't always mean fur- Stella McCartney doesn't use any leather or fur in any of her design's.

BuzzWorthy Beauty: Duwop Lip Venom

Want fuller-looking lips? Say hello to Lip Venom! This stuff works like magic, temporarily plumping up your pout with just a swipe of some gloss! Lip Venom comes in a cute pink tube and smells like bubble gum. But we warned--this stuff stings! The way it works is it increasing circulation in lips with slightly irritating them with flavors like ginger and cinnamon. I have to admit, this stuff is a little uncomfortable! This spicy gloss tingles your lips, but don't freak out--it's not supposed to cause you pain, just a spicy & tingly feeling on your lips. Well, does it work? I've used it a couple of times and it does give lips a rosy hue and a slight fullness (don't worry it does not make your lips puff up like you've had collagen injections!!). I like it and I'm totally not bothered by the stinging, but it's up to you if its worth it or not! Click 2 Buy.

Food For Thought- The Importance of Breakfast

Skipping breakfast. We've all done it once and a while. Maybe you were running late for an appointment or for class, and just didn't have time to eat. Or maybe, you're just not a breakfast person.
Either way, you didn't put any food into your stomach.
Your mindset may be, oh well, I'll eat later, it's not a big deal.
But it is a big deal.
Nutritionist Jodi Godfrey explains: "After 8 hours of sleeping, you're breaking a fast. Your body needs fuel. From our necks down, our bodies can break down muscles and fats. You're brain can't do that. It needs to be fueled by food. Without breakfast, your brain isn't on."
This means that you won't be able to focus as well in class, or do well through out the day. The most productive thing you can do for yourself in the morning is eat breakfast. So next time when you're walking (or for most of you-running) out the door on the way to class, stop and grab a banana. It may just boost your grade on that test you forgot to study for:)

UGG vs UGGly- You Decide

What do you think about Ugg's? Are they a fashion staple, or a fashion faux pas? My opinion? They're my go-to winter shoes. Whenever I want a comfy day, I wear them with some leggings and a t-shirt. Whenever I'm feeling more stylish, I wear them with my skinny jeans and a Three Dots shirt. Other people, however, don't like Ugg's. Some of my friends are on the UGGly side, and completely despise them.
 What's your opinion?

Song of the Week: Make Me Proud-Drake feat Nicki Minaj

If you're like me, you love to watch SNL every Saturday. Or more accurately, record it and watch it the next morning:) Anyway, if you watched it last week with Drake as the musical guest, you probably heard his killer performances. The first was  song was 'Headlines', and the second was 'Make Me Proud'. After I heard him and Nicki perform this song, I instantly fell in love with it. It's on a constant loop on my ipod. With catchy beats, clever lyrics, and a stellar verse from Nicki Minaj, this song is well worthy of being our Song of the Week.

The Best Way to Get Rid of Your Hiccups

Hiccups. No one likes them, and they can be super-pesky. Not exactly the kind of thing you want to get when you're talking to your boss or on a first date. But, how do you get them to go away? Well, you could try holding your breath (doesn't usually work), or swallowing a bit of sugar (tastes good, but not really effective),  or even cream of tartar on an empty stomach (eww, I know. Wouldn't recommend it). But the best way I know of to lose your hiccups? Pull your tongue! Sound weird, looks weird, but works. Stick your tongue out as far as it will go, and them pull on it with both hands for 20 seconds. This helps to break up the rhythm of your hiccups and releases air. Just a tip though, don't try this at the dinner table:)

Seeing Red! Emmy's 2011 Fashion Recap

As many of you know, the Emmy's were on Sunday night, and it was a star-studded event. Jane Lynch hosted the 63'rd annual episode, and the main fashion trend was: RED! Stars such as Lea Michele and Kate Winslet wowed in the color. My personal favorite in red , however, was Nina Dobrev. Even though her dress was the same bold color as many other celebrities at the event, Dobrev's drop-waisted ruffle look complimented her figure and kept her looking mature, but not too old for her age. My least favorite red-dress of the night was on Margo Martindale, the top part of the outfit was a different color then the red at the bottom of the dress, though the style was flattering on her body.

So, how do you like the red trend at the Emmys? Leave a comment and share your opinion.

How To S.I.N.G. (It's not what you think)

Self-defense is super important to learn- especially for women and teen girls. You should always know how to protect yourself, no matter what situation you're in. That's where the S.I.N.G. method comes in handy. S.I.N.G. stands for Solar Plexus, Instep, Nose, Groin. It was started, ironically, by Sandra Bullocks's character in the movie Miss Congeniality, but is now being used more an more frequently as a form of self-defense. Here's how to do it:

1. Solar Plexus
Your Solar Plexus is the area below your lungs, at the beginning of your stomach. This area is vulnerable and sensitive, and a thrust or a sharp jab to it will greatly weaken your attacker.

2. Instep
The second part of the S.I.N.G. method is instep. For this maneuver, you lift up either one of your feet and bring it down hard on your attacker's foot. This will further cripple them and make it hard for them to run after you.

3. Nose
The third move in S.I.N.G. is an elbow or a punch to the nose. Use all your force with this one, because a hard enough hit will cause your attackers nose to break and his eyes to water, further impairing him from hurting you.

4. Groin
The last step in this process is an elbow, punch, or if possible, a kick to the groin. This final move will ensure that your attacker will be completely unable to come after you for quite a while, giving you time to get as far away from him as possible and call the police.

Hopefully you'll never need to use this tactic, but if you ever find yourself in a situation where physical self-defense is necessary, don't forget to S.I.N.G!

Make every day chic, no work necessary!

It's a lousy day out: rain, snow, sleet--you name it! Or maybe it's perfectly nice out but you were up late studying. The point is, you don't feel like making an effort and putting on a cute smock-top or squeezing into your tight jeans. Your solution: sweatpants. I know, we all have those days. My advice? Steer clear from the sweatpants/messy-bun look. Looking cute can be effortless, you know! Taking a "sweatpants day" can really affect your attitude for the whole entire day. It may sound superficial, but looking like a bum makes you feel like a bum. Confidence is key! Instead of grabbing that sweatshirt, just put on a soft tee-shirt and a cardigan. You can be comfortable and still be chic. It doesn't have to be an all-or-nothing sort of deal where you either look super cute, or look like you just rolled out of bed.

P.S.  A great, chic "comfy-day" item? Long, cozy, wrap sweaters (not too long, not below the knee or else you'll look like you're wearing a blanket!) They're warm and cuddly and look great with jeans, leggings--you name it!

WhateverWeFeelLikeBlogging: The Swim Edition

Whether you're jetting off to St. Barts, or you're just chilling at the pool, the perfect suit is a must. FYI: a lot of these suits are sold in separates, I've just showcased both the top & bottom.

Retro Polka Dots- This Delias vintage inspired bikini is so cute. The fit reminds me of 50's chic--so classic & playful! Btw, there are other styles of the bottoms in case you don't like the high-waist look. Click 2 shop

One Piece- I'm personally not all that wild about one-piece bathing suits, but I love this one. The print on this ASOS suit is so unique and interesting. The deep V neckline & halter top are universally flattering and the black front tie is so cute. Shop

Sporty- this surfer-chic Hurley piece is great for riding the waves or just laying on the sand. I love the geometric pattern and cool colors. Shop

Tie-Dye Bandeau- I love the bright print on this Victoria's Secret bandeau! This suit is so cute and the tie dye gives it a laid-back beachy-vibe. Shop

Snakeskin Animal Print- This Michael Kors suit is fierce and the metallic accent pieces add a pretty touch. Shop

Must-Have of the Month- April's Item

Everyone knows that you can't wear the same dresses year-round, each season has different temperatures and therefore, different outfits. I was in midtown (Manhattan) yesterday, and I stopped at Bloomingdales. After browsing the merchandise (and avoiding those overly-enthusiastic sales people in the perfume department who always try to spray you with scents), I went up to the fifth floor, a.k.a. the dress section. I saw so many pretty pieces, including a gorgeous French-Connection dress that I was debating buying, when I saw this dress.

This gorgeous Lauren by Ralph Lauren shirred-floral dress is amazing. It features delicate ruching on one side of the dress, which accentuates waistlines and makes you look taller and leaner. It also showcases  a flattering crossover neckline and an empire-waist cut. This dress is priced at $134.00, which is quite reasonable for a Ralph Lauren piece, and if you know you'll put it to good use, then this dress is a great must-have.

Rihanna's "S&M": The Disturbing & Inappropriate Truth Behind The Catchy Pop Song

You're driving in the car, with maybe your mom and little sister. You turn on the radio and tune it to one of the hit-music pop stations. Rihanna's sexy S&M romp is on. Your little sister likes it and starts to sing along. You may wonder, what's wrong with this picture? S&M is an abbreviation for the word sadomasochistic. Sadomasochism is a type of sex that involves physical/emotional abuse/pain in the form of whipping, using chains & other weapons, etc. If you have a filter on your search engine, and search the term S&M, the content will be blocked because of explicit graphics. Just a few days ago, I actually sang along to the song, thinking it was catchy and fun. Little did I know the real meaning of it. If the title isn't enough to totally disgust you, in the song she says, "Sticks and stones many break my bones but chains and whips excite me." Do you think an elementary or middle schooler would know what sadomasochism is? No, I highly doubt it. But the question is why is this permitted to be played on the radio? I'm considering writing a complaint because it is so horrible that young people are being exposed to this in the form of a catchy pop song. What baffles me is that Rihanna of all people, a victim of abuse, would sing about a sick and twisted topic such as S&M so casually, knowing that children are listening. She has a young following, and I know kids and teens nationwide have this song on their ipod, naively unaware. I used to be a Rihanna fan, but quite frankly, this threw me over the edge. I don't know what she was thinking. Her need to be 'edgy' and 'wild' sends an awful message. Imagine a teenage boy who thinks Rihanna is attractive is listening to this song: he's going to get the picture that women like this kind of 'edgy' whips and chains sort of thing. What is your opinion? Comment and tell us where you stand.

Hate It or Heart It- 'Judas' by Lady GaGa

So by now, most of you have probably heard Lady GaGa's latest song, Judas. (Click here to listen). This song has been kind of controversial, sparking a lot of debate between GaGa's 'monsters', and other listeners. Some people are saying that her song is sac-religious, while others are looking more into the lyrics and saying that it isn't that at all. I personally like the song Judas, and it's not because Lady GaGa is my favorite singer or anything (Katy Perry:) ). See, to me, this song is saying that she's in love with someone who betrayed her. She still has to make a good song for me to like it, and Judas won me over. It's catchy, has interesting lyrics, and a nice beat. But I'm only one out of about 6.5 billion people, so comment your opinion on the song. Do you Hate It, or Heart It?

comment, people:)

Naked Juice

When rushing back and forth from dance class to dance class, I'm always looking out for healthy quick-fixes and swaps I can use to have the healthiest diet possible. Being the health-nut that I am, (don't judge!), I've come across a great alternative/easy option if you're not getting enough fruit--or you're too busy to eat it. Naked juice is PACKED with fruit, and they somehow manage to sneak veggies in too! But the best part is, it tastes sooooooo good!!!  While fresh fruit is delicious, if you find that you can't get your hands on it frequently, Naked juice is an equivalent option. (You'll get just the same amount of fruit--or more, with NO  added sugar!! Oh and guess what, their bottles are recycled so you're doing good for your body & the environment when you drink this stuff! They also have a website:

Song of the Week- Cosmic Love by Florence + The Machine

Now, I know that DancingPrincess has already made a song of the week post, but I love this song so much that I couldn't resist making another one. Cosmic Love has become my latest obsession for a few reasons.

1. Though I sometimes tend to lean toward more cookie-cutter pop music (by that I mean current music and bands, like The Black Eyed Peas), this song's alternative genre and feel makes it so fun and interesting to listen to.

2. Cosmic Love is so energizing. We've all had that moment where we're like, ugh, I can't make it through the rest of the day, or run that extra mile at the gym, or clean the house. It's during these moments that I play this song, because it just shoots a bolt of positive, happy energy through you, and makes you feel a lot better.

3. Florence's music is unlike anything you've ever heard before. Her voice is memorable, in a good way. I would recognize it instantly. The melody of Cosmic Love is fantastic, and though I love the lyrics as well, sometimes I just like listening to the music.

I <3 Florence + The Machine :)
you'll love this song
