Winter Horseback Riding Tips

Just because there's snow on the ground, doesn't mean that you can't horseback ride! You just have to follow a slightly different set of rules for winter riding.
1. Plan extra time for cool down-a wet horse put back in his stall too soon will get cold.
2. Wear winter riding boots- these shoes are warmer, just make sure that you can easily get your feet out of the stirrups.
3. Don't let snowballs form in your horses feet while you ride-coat the bottom of the hooves in petroleum jelly.
4. Warm the bit before putting it in your horses mouth-run it under hot water for 10 seconds (make sure it is just warm, not really hot).
5. Ride indoors when the snow gets past your horses fetlock, unless you're just walking or trotting.
Have fun!
